Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) August 04, 2014

A recent article by ESPN highlighted St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jaime Garcia’s choice to undergo thoracic outlet surgery. The pitcher, who has suffered from consistent injuries during his career, believed the procedure was the best solution to his long-standing injuries.

The term “thoracic outlet” refers to the space between the collarbone and first rib where a number of nerves, blood vessels, and muscles pass through. The surgery involves removing the first rib in order to relieve the pressure that comes from a compressed thoracic outlet. At the Thoracic Outlet Surgery Center of Excellence, Dr. Ali Mahtabifard understands that while thoracic outlet surgery is a major decision for athletes, it’s often the only solution to constant physical problems.

“Choosing to undergo thoracic outlet surgery can be tough for some athletes, but doing so can result in a major boost to physical well being and performance,” said Dr. Mahtabifard, who is double board certified in general and cardiothoracic surgery. “The injuries that lead to thoracic outlet surgery are often unable to be cured by any other procedure.”

When the nerves between the collarbone and first rib become compressed during thoracic outlet syndrome, there are few ways to undo the damage. Over time, the symptoms will begin to take a toll on performance. Common symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome include:

●    Pain in the arm, hand, neck, or shoulder
●    Tingling or numbness in the arm or hand
●    Swelling of the arm or shoulder
●    Discoloration of the arm
●    Depression in the shoulder

“Because an athlete’s body is compromised by thoracic outlet syndrome, he or she won’t be able to perform at a peak level,” said Dr. Mahtabifard. “Only by completely ending the condition can athletes confidently return to their proper form.”

“I am thrilled to join Integrative Nutrition as a guest speaker,” said Huffington. “My journey with wellness began in 2007 when I had my own personal wake-up call. I learned that prioritizing my well-being above overwork and stress is critical to having a truly successful life. Joshua Rosenthal shares my passion for slowing down, sleep, meditation, and mindfulness, and Integrative Nutrition gives its students amazing tools to improve their well-being and thrive in their day-to-day lives.”

Integrative Nutrition’s flagship course trains students to become Health Coaches, wellness mentors who work with clients to help them achieve their personal health goals. The curriculum combines holistic nutrition education, business training, and self-improvement philosophy and gives students the tools to begin building their new careers while still in school. As a guest speaker at Integrative Nutrition, Huffington elaborates on the philosophy discussed in her latest book Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder.

“I am extremely proud to welcome Arianna Huffington to the Integrative Nutrition community,” said Joshua Rosenthal, Integrative Nutrition’s Founder, Director, and Primary Teacher. “We’re constantly striving to provide our students with the best possible education and Ms. Huffington is such an inspirational figure. Her emphasis on the importance of self-care illustrates a core principle of Integrative Nutrition’s curriculum, primary food—healthy relationships, regular physical activity, a fulfilling career, and a spiritual practice are just as important to your health as the food on your plate. With this amazing new guest speaker, I hope students are empowered to find the balance in their lives that they need to thrive.”

Genomind Clinical Study Demonstrates Effectiveness of the Genecept(TM) Assay CHALFONT, PA--(Marketwired - June 03, 2014) -Genomind, a personalized medicine company, is pleased to announce the publication of its clinical study, "Pharmacogenetic-Guided Psychiatric Intervention Associated with Increased Adherence and Cost Savings," in the American Journal of Managed Care (AJMC) (May, 2014).

This study, undertaken with IMS Health, demonstrated a cost savings of 9.5% in outpatient costs over the four month trial period for patients who utilized the Assay compared to patients who did not. This equates to a relative annual outpatient cost savings of $1,686 per patient. Additionally, patients who used the Genecept Assay had significantly increased medication adherence rates when compared to matched controls.

"This is the first published study examining the Genecept Assay and its impact on resource utilization and medication adherence," said Dr. Jay Lombard, Genomind's Chief Scientific Officer and Medical Director. "This study provides real-world evidence that the Genecept Assay leads to increased medication adherence and lower healthcare costs."

This adds to a growing body of evidence that pharmacogenetic testing can inform treatment interventions, leading to increased medication adherence in otherwise difficult to treat patients. The observed increase in adherence was associated with a significant decrease in overall costs related to outpatient activity. The study demonstrates that pharmacogenetic testing helps reduce the elevated healthcare costs of this population by identifying effective therapies and increasing medication adherence, thus decreasing the need for excess healthcare services.

EPA plan would slash climate-damaging carbon emissions from 1,000 existing power plants

The Environmental Protection Agency on Monday proposed the first-ever limits on greenhouse gas emissions from existing power plants. The high-profile announcement marks the second time in less than a year the agency has released far-reaching rules aimed at fulfilling a key pillar of President Obama’s sweeping climate plan — to cut carbon pollution from both existing and planned power plants.

EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy unveiled a dense, 645-page proposal to limit carbon dioxide emissions from roughly 1,000 existing coal, gas, and oil plants nationwide — the largest source of carbon pollution in the United States, accounting for nearly one- third of all domestic greenhouse gas emissions. McCarthy presented the groundbreaking regulation as a “vital piece of President Obama’s climate plan” and “critical step forward” in the global fight against climate change.

“This is not just about disappearing polar bears or melting ice caps,” she said. “This is about protecting our health and our homes. This is about protecting local economies and jobs.”

Dubbed the “Clean Power Plan,” the EPA proposal would cut carbon emissions from existing plants by as much as 30 percent by 2030, as compared to 2005 levels — or, about 730 million metric tons of carbon pollution. Under this plan, state officials would develop energy-efficiency policies and renewable-energy programs to meet what the EPA has identified as state-specific goals for reducing carbon pollution.

To reach such “carbon targets,” the states could implement a range of options from designing a market-based carbon tax to using “no carbon” electricity sources like wind, solar, and nuclear. The EPA proposal would give states a flexible timeline for submitting their plans to the agency, with initial drafts or final plans due by June 2016.

Touting the plan’s “huge” benefits, including the billions of dollars saved in health-care costs because of fewer asthma attacks and premature deaths, the EPA administrator called it “an investment in better health and a better future for our kids.”

New Study Links Enzyme with Poor Mesothelioma Outcomes, According to...

Enzyme May Increase Mesothelioma Aggressiveness

Raleigh, NC (PRWEB) August 04, 2014

Scientists studying a call surface protein called CD157 say it can impact multiple aspects of mesothelioma – from how fast it grows to how easily it spreads – and may even affect chemotherapy response. Surviving Mesothelioma has just posted an article on the new research. Click here to read it now.

Researchers at the University of Torino in Torino, Italy say CD157, which has been associated with ovarian cancer, can be used to predict how fast mesothelioma will progress and how well it will respond to treatment. The affects were particularly pronounced in the biphasic type of mesothelioma.

“High CD157 was a negative prognostic factor and an independent predictor of poor survival for patients with biphasic malignant pleural mesothelioma by multivariate survival analysis,” report co-authors Dr. Erika Ortolan of the University of Torino Laboratory of Immunogenetics and oncologist and Dr. Alice Giacomino.

The study found high CD157 expression in four out of nine mesothelioma cell lines and in 85 percent of mesothelioma surgical tissue samples.

“Patients with biphasic mesothelioma often face a worse prognosis than people with other types of mesothelioma. If CD157 can help clinicians decide which patients are the best candidates for certain treatments, it has the potential to improve their survival odds,” says Surviving Mesothelioma’s Managing Editor, Alex Strauss.

The new study was published in a recent issue of the journal Oncotarget. To read more about the findings, see Enzyme Makes Mesothelioma More Aggressive, Less Responsive to Treatment, available now on the Surviving Mesothelioma website.

New “Rejuvenase” Enzyme Supplement by Logos Nutritionals Dramatically...

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) July 31, 2014

Logos Nutritionals of Atlanta, GA, proudly introduces its newest product, Rejuvenase™, a breakthrough proprietary digestive enzyme formulation that dramatically enhances the body’s ability to digest and maximize the use of protein. The product is designed to be taken in conjunction with whey or another dietary protein.

The human body undergoes a constant process of maintenance, replacing cells and repairing tissues. Dietary protein is essential to this process. That’s why millions of people worldwide take protein supplements to maintain their health, manage chronic illnesses, and/or support athletic lifestyles. Unfortunately, if protein is not broken down completely by the body, an immune response may be triggered causing inflammation, bloating, cramping, nausea and/or gut discomfort. Depending upon the individual, symptoms experienced can be mild to life-threatening in nature.

“Until Rejuvenase, there has never been a simple, low-cost and effective solution to this absorption problem with dietary protein,” says John Burgstiner, founder and president of Logos Nutritionals. “As a result of our manufacturing partner’s seminal research, we can now offer a revolutionary enzyme product that eliminates large peptides which can trigger allergic responses to protein, promote inflammation and cause discomfort. An added bonus is that Rejuvenase also supports the immune system‘s overall healing potential.”

After five years of R&D activity, data indicates Rejuvenase maximizes all of the beneficial properties of a protein supplement by producing massive quantities of pure amino acids and small biologically active peptides. These tiny bioactive molecules are intimately involved in numerous aspects of metabolism, and help keep our cells in optimal health.

Amazingly, lab results show Rejuvenase can almost triple the body’s ability to absorb protein when added to a protein supplement; thus increasing the level of amino acids in the bloodstream up to 55 times more than dietary protein not containing Rejuvenase. “This means greater health benefits can be achieved using a much smaller serving size of protein,” explains Burgstiner. “Athletes will certainly appreciate increased efficiency at a lower dose, but the real winners will be the elderly and chronically ill who so desperately need the incredible benefits protein has to offer."

In the near future, Logos Nutritionals will offer a premixed whey formula that capitalizes on the unique benefits of Rejuvenase.

A bottle of 60 Rejuvenase vegetarian/gluten-free capsules retails for $23.99. The product is sold on the company’s website, through medical professionals, and at select pharmacies and natural health stores nationwide.

Charleston Plastic Surgeon Highlights Valuable Visual Tools for Breast Augmentation CHARLESTON, SC--(Marketwired - Jun 3, 2014) - Recent technological advancements in breast implants have led to women having more choices for breast augmentation than ever before. While this increased number of options ultimately provides women with the ability to select implants that will most likely achieve the exact cosmetic outcome they are seeking, Dr. Ram Kalus understands his breast augmentation patients also need tools to help them select not only the ideal breast implant, but also the ideal implant size. As a result, Dr. Kalus uses a combination of an extensive and comprehensive photo gallery as well as a system of implant sizers to maximize patient satisfaction.

In a recent pair of blog posts, Dr. Kalus breaks down why each of these resources is beneficial for his Charleston plastic surgery patients. "The one concern many of our breast augmentation patients share is ending up with breasts that are too large, most often because they have seen so many women who have been over-augmented," says Dr. Kalus in a post titled, "How To Achieve Your Ideal Breast Size." He goes on to explain that during the initial consultation, breast augmentation patients typically use bra cup sizes as their main means of communicating the results they expect. However, due to inconsistencies in cup size labeling as well as women wearing bra sizes that are either too small or too large, Dr. Kalus states that cup size alone should never be used to dictate implant selection. "Since breast augmentation is the most common aesthetic surgical procedure performed today, and also one of the most frequent sources for patient dissatisfaction or even litigation, it is critical to get it right for the patient," says Dr. Kalus.

Instead, he believes "it is critical for patients to have a 'visual' conversation with their plastic surgeon, as well as a verbal one when deciding on an implant size." To initiate this visual conversation, he encourages patients to use his website's gallery ( that contains before-and-after photographs uniquely of his patients. The gallery is specifically designed for patients to enter their height, weight, and preoperative breast size in order to view all women in the gallery who fall into the same dimensions. Additionally, it enables patients to see women whose breasts may be similar, even though they may have a different height or weight.

A follow-up blog post, titled, "How Breast Sizers Can Increase Patient Satisfaction," details the benefits of using implant sizers during the consultation process and the actual procedure. Before the surgery, sizers in a bra allow women to "try on" different sizes for a better visual reference point, while the sizers used in the operating room can provide Dr. Kalus one final safeguard against selecting an implant that is too large or too small. "No matter how much experience we have as surgeons," says the Charleston plastic surgeon, "we can never precisely predict how a particular breast implant will look in a patient's breast until it is inserted during the procedure itself."

Ultimately, Dr. Kalus' goal at Plastic Surgery of the Carolinas is to help ensure the final results achieved meet the patient's expectations, look natural, and are proportionate with the rest of the body.

About Ram Kalus, MD, FACS

Dr. Kalus earned both his undergraduate and medical degree from Boston University and is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Before founding Plastic Surgery of the Carolinas, he served as Associate Professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, and he currently serves as a faculty member at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Dr. Kalus is also affiliated with the Roper-St. Francis Medical system, the Charleston Surgery Center, and the East Cooper Medical Center. He is available for interview upon request.

Learning Another Language May Help the Aging Brain Learning Another Language May Help the Aging Brain Even doing so as an adult seemed to guard against mental decline, study found
WebMD News from HealthDay

Accumulated knowledge helped seniors outperform By Robert Preidt HealthDay Reporter MONDAY, June 2, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Speaking two or more languages helps protect your brain as you age, even if you learn new languages as an adult, new research suggests. The study included 835 people born in Scotland in 1936 whose first language was English. They were given mental skills tests at age 11 and again in their early 70s. Of the participants, 262 were able to speak at least two languages, with 195 of them learning a second language before age 18, and the rest after that age. Those who spoke two or more languages did much better on the mental skills tests when they were older than what would be expected from the tests they took when they were younger, especially in the areas of general intelligence and reading, the study authors found. The positive effects of bilingualism were seen whether people learned new languages when they were children or adults, the researchers noted in the report published online June 2 in the journal Annals of Neurology. According to study author Dr. Thomas Bak, from the Centre for Cognitive Aging and Cognitive Epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh, this study is the first to take into account for childhood intelligence while examining whether learning a second language affects mental skills later in life. "These findings are of considerable practical relevance. Millions of people around the world acquire their second language later in life. Our study shows that bilingualism, even when acquired in adulthood, may benefit the aging brain," Bak concluded in a journal news release. Although the study showed an association between learning a second language and having a sharper mind later in life, it was not designed to determine a cause-and-effect link between the two. The findings provide "an important first step in understanding the impact of learning a second language and the aging brain," Dr. Alvaro Pascual-Leone, an associate editor for Annals of Neurology and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, wrote in an accompanying commentary. Did you know that over 100 million American women are overweight which is 67% of the population? Did you know that plus size clothing is STILL considered a specialty market? We want to know WHY? If the average American struggles with weight and eating disorder issues why do we continue to shame and torture them by making plus size clothing expensive and rare? Ridiculous, right?

Bella Moxie wants to inspire woman to love their bodies..

  1. We want to open a store that provides Women and youth trendy fashions. We will carry sizes 12-28.
  2. We will use ONLY Plus Size Models and Mannequins. You've said it before "Well it looked good on the mannequin." (Ladies!! Lets stop comparing ourselves to the size 3 mannequins that we are not! ) At Bella Moxie our goal is to dress our customers for comfort and success. We know half the struggle with shopping can be the negative voices we hear.
  3. We will NOT shame. Here's what I mean: when I was younger I had to go to the woman/plus size section to shop and I felt horribly embarrassed. We will advertise our shop by its name not by the sizes we carry. We will also provide water, fans and dimmed lights in ALL of our large dressing rooms. As a curvy woman I know that dressing rooms can be small and uncomfortable.
  4. We KNOW our customers. Some days our customers will come in with confidence and other days they may feel insecure. We will provide them with a supportive place to shop. We will create a Wall of Inspiration. On this wall we will proudly display the names of our supporters (YOU!), as well as make it an interactive wall for customers to encourage each other to love their bodies.
  5. We no longer have to "MAKE DO"with the clothing at other department stores. You know the ones I am talking about. You enter a department store and they put the plus size section in the back of the store behind the tampons. Those stores usually sell out of the bigger sizes first so you're left with a few cute items that don't fit you and then those items that your mom would wear. Or you have to buy something online (which can be such a hassle if you have to return it). At Bella Moxie we will focus on providing our customers with what they want, need and feel beautiful in.
  6. Once a store is established we will create a Foundation to talk to youth about creating a positive body image and decreasing peer to peer bullying.
